Blocks

Measure block production and composition to assess network throughput, scalability, and miner participation.

Overview
Block-related metrics provide insight into the operational efficiency and congestion of the blockchain. They reflect how frequently blocks are mined, their total and average sizes, and their overall computational weight — which is influenced by transaction count, SegWit usage, and script complexity.

Formula

B l o c k W e i g h t t o t a l = i = 1 n W e i g h t i BlockWeight_{total} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} Weight_i
B l o c k W e i g h t m e a n = B l o c k W e i g h t t o t a l n BlockWeight_{mean} = \frac{BlockWeight_{total}}{n}
B l o c k S i z e m e a n = i = 1 n S i z e i n BlockSize_{mean} = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} Size_i}{n}

Interpretation

  • Higher block weight/size: indicates high transaction demand or SegWit utilization.

  • Lower block size: low activity or reduced fee pressure.

  • Block mined rate: stable production shows healthy miner participation.

Insights
Monitoring block data helps identify network congestion, fee market pressure, and scalability efficiency over time.
